Amir Khan (Regional Finance Manager, Royal Bank of Scotland):
After graduating from The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) with an Economics degree in 2008, Amir took part in an employability programme run by The Adab Trust. His decision to take part in this programme was prompted by a desire to network and improve his interview skills. |
The Trust provided the advice and support Amir needed to kick start his career. Asked to describe the support he received from the Trust, Amir comments: |
"The advice and mentoring was fantastic. Due to the recession, I was applying to roles that I wasn’t interested in and having no luck in securing a graduate placement. Having spoken to the Adab Trust team, they advised me that I should focus and apply to what I had a true passion in. Having taken on the advice, within months, I was offered a graduate placement at the RBS in Real Estate." |
He strongly recommends the services of The Adab Trust to undergraduates and recent graduates: |
"I truly believe that without the guidance and support of the Adab Trust, I would not have secured my role. Since joining the RBS, I have been fortunate enough to move up the career ladder quicker than most. In doing so, I have worked with the Adab Trust to employ graduates within my own team." |

Louise Dunsby (Surveyor at Lloyd's Register): |
"I did a placement in Rotterdam earlier this year and enjoyed it so much that I will be working there permanently from September. I'm really enjoying working for Lloyd's. The technical side of the job is interesting and challenging, it's generally a pleasant environment to work in, and there so many interesting opportunities available if you are open to them. I'm very excited about the move - it will give me the opportunity to get technical authorisations which I can't get in London and will therefore broaden my horizons for my future (with LR of course). Anyway, I wouldn't be in this position if I hadn't been fortunate enough to have come across Adab, so thank you." |

Mr Kamran Ijaz (Hedge Fund Operations Associate at Lansdowne Partners): |
"After gaining a First Class degree from London Metropolitan University in Accounting and Finance, I joined the Adab Trust’s, Steps to Success programme. The programme was instrumental in building my confidence levels. I had applied to a number of banking firms after graduating, but on each occasion I was unsuccessful in securing an interview, which left me with a lot of self doubt.
However, the Adab Trust gave me the opportunity to develop my skills and confidence so that I would persevere with my career ambitions. The ability tests, interviews and presentations undoubtedly boosted my self esteem. At the end of the programme Adab facilitated an interview with State Street Bank which I was able to convert into a permanent job.
I am forever thankful to Adab for the help and guidance they gave me. I now mentor students at Tower Hamlets College in my spare time. By guiding them in CV preparation and career opportunities, I can pass on the invaluable knowledge and support that Adab gave to me." |

Ms Yvette Haguma (Junior Consultant at RIMES Technologies Limited): |
" I learned of the Adab Trust Leadership by Example Programme through Dermot O'Brien whom I met at an open day event in Canary Wharf and was invited to the interview stage. The feedback was readily made available to me and was helpful in marking the next steps of my career.
The next stage was the Assessment Centre where I was assessed by the Odgers. Even though I was not successful at this stage the feedback that they gave was invaluable. Helen and Dermot were most supportive and helped me see that this was not the end. So I took the advice on the chin and made the necessary ammendments and before long through Adab there was an opportunity to work at Lloyd's Register as an intern. This materialised into a job as a consultant. Thanks to the Adab Trust." |
